MEETING IDEAS: Participate in building the future!

1. Get involved with Engineers Without Borders (EWB) (http://www.ewb-usa.org or http://www.ewb-international.org/). Fund a project (email: grants@ewb-usa.org), mentor a student team, or sponsor your own project. For ASME participation in this program, visit http://www.asme.org/students/ewb.html.

At the next Engineers Without Borders (http://www.ewb-usa.org) conference, Fall 2005, nominate your project for an award, beginning with a paragraph submission that addresses how your project met each of the six award areas to EWB:

  • Humanitarian: How far reaching within the community served did your project go?
  • Education: How did you utilize education and training?
  • Appropriate Technology: What innovations were applied and at the same time maintained the integrity of being an appropriate technology project?
  • Collaborative Efforts: What did you do to make this project work with professionals, mentors, students and the community?
  • Chapter Development: In what ways did your project further strengthen your chapter and inspire others to participate?

2. Invite a speaker to your next ASME Meeting — or to a local community or school event. Here are some suggestions:

ASME Distinguished Lecturers:

Ian M. Arbon, ASME Distinguished Lecture: Available through June 30, 2005 — Renewable Energy and Sustainability

Dr. Frank Kreith, P.E., ASME Distinguished Lecture: Available through June 30, 2005 — Fuel Cell Vehicles: Promise and Reality or Hydrogen Economy: Promise and Reality

Ramesh K. Shah, ASME Distinguished Lecture: Available through June 30, 2007 — Fuel Cell Technology: A Myth or Reality?

Also

Cathy Leslie, Executive Director of Engineers Without Borders–USA

3. Participate in major celebrations:

Earth Day (www.earthsite.org), March 20, 2005--Connect with your local school or museum to sponsor a special talk on the environment. Compare early technology to “green” technology.

World Environment Day (http://www.wed2005.org/), June 5, 2005, is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations (UNEP) stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action. The theme this year is Green Cities; the slogan is Plan for the Planet! (The main international celebrations of the World Environment Day 2005 will be held in San Francisco, California, USA.)
