A world
renowned hydraulic engineer whose innovations revolutionized the pumping
industry, Henry R. Worthington had several inventions leading to the perfection
of the direct steam pump (1845-55), patented the duplex steam pump (1859),
and built the first duplex waterworks engine, widely adopted and used
for more than 75 years. His water works system was installed in many municipalities
and villages in the United States because of its reliability and low operating
cost. He contributed significantly to engineering education and to the
community of technical societies, whose exchange of information and ideas
